Why You Should Always See Your Physician after a Car Accident

Visiting a Doctor after car accident

After a very serious car accident, a victim may have such serious injuries that emergency medical personnel will transport them directly to the hospital for treatment. In other cases, however, an accident victim may not need emergency transport but may have still suffered injuries from the crash. Such victims may not know whether or not to see a doctor or whether to wait and see if their injuries heal on their own. The following are some reasons why it is always wise to visit the emergency department or your physician following a car accident.

Your Health

Some injuries may be serious but also may be “silent,” meaning that symptoms are not immediately apparent. This is often the case with concussions, as the symptoms of disorientation may be mistaken as stress and exhaustion that are common after a collision. In addition, the pain and stiffness caused by whiplash may not develop for hours or even days after the crash.

Just because you do not have symptoms does not mean that you are not injured. If you have neck or back injuries or a concussion, you need medical treatment, even if you believe the injury will eventually heal on its own. Some injuries, if ignored, will only worsen and put you at risk of complications and further serious injury in the future. For this reason, you should always be examined by a medical professional after an accident.

Your Financial Recovery

If you do receive medical treatment for your injuries, you will likely want to seek financial recovery for your medical bills and lost wages from your no-fault insurance or from the party that caused the accident in court. Either way, you will have to prove the following:

  • The costs of diagnosing and treating your injuries
  • That your injuries were caused by the accident in question

If you delay in seeking medical care, an insurance company may try to claim that your injuries were caused by a subsequent event instead of the accident and it may become significantly more complicated to receive compensation. Having a timely examination and diagnosis can help you recover both physically and financially.
