Dangers of Driving in the Summer in Michigan

Dangers of Driving in the Summer in MichiganThe dangers of driving in the summer in Michigan only get worse as the season progresses. In the Midwest, one would agree that summer is the most favored out of the seasons. However, summer is the season where there is the highest number of motor vehicle accidents resulting in death. Summer driving gets even more dangerous in July and August.  A whopping 116 deaths occur each day throughout the U.S as reported by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. These fatalities usually occur in the late afternoon and evenings approximately between 3 and 7pm. This is the second year that traffic deaths have risen to 10% more than usual. The frequencies of car accidents, serious injuries, and motorcycle deaths has increased as well. If you or a loved one was recently involved in a car crash in Michigan, a Michigan auto accident lawyer at Elia & Ponto can help you.

Summer Driving Safety Tips

Almost 100% of all car crashes are caused by avoidable human factors as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Distracted driving, driving under the influence, and speeding are all factors of such oblivious behavior. When drivers don’t wear seat belts, motorcycle helmets, or other protective gear needed while controlling a motor vehicle they are putting themselves at a very high risk of traffic fatalities. Speaking with a Michigan auto accident lawyer can greatly improve your chances at receiving compensation for your injuries if you or a loved one was involved in a car accident.

Summer driving safety tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration:

  • Practice routine maintenance like tune-ups, battery checks, and tire rotation. If you are going to be traveling a long distance, make sure the tire pressure, wiper blades, fluid levels, lights, and air conditioning of the vehicle is working correctly
  • Everyone in a moving vehicle should wear a seatbelt with no exceptions. Children need to be in an appropriate car or booster seat and children under 13 should never ride in the front, only in the back.
  • Motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians are more unprotected in the summer. They share the road with big cars and trucks. Keep a responsible distance of 3 or 4 seconds between your vehicle and a motorcycle, and always watch out for pedestrians and bicyclists.
  • Be alert and take a few breaks during long traveling trips. Make sure during these stops that you are getting rest, eating well, and stretching. In order to drive safely you cannot get too tired while driving and are advised to pull over and stay at a motel if need be.
  • Pack an emergency kit for the road. Unexpected mishaps may come up on your trip which is why you need to always be prepared with emergency items such as a first-aid kit, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, water, and blankets. It can also be helpful to pack an extra cell phone, spare battery, and charger.
  • Don’t drive if you are under the influence. Choose a designated driver if you are planning to drink on a night out. If no one in your vehicle can drive safely, call a ride service such as a taxi.
  • Avoid distraction by not texting, drinking, eating, and using your in-vehicle technologies and portable electronic devices. Anything that takes your attention away from the road should be prohibited. Driving distracted is the cause of approximately 10% of all fatal crashes and 15% of injury crashes.
